If you press "I" when playing Minecraft your inventory will pop up then at the top there are 4 box like this... put wood in 1 box then it makes wooden plank's, put 4 wooden plank' s in all the box's then a crafting table will come. use the crafting table to make things like tools, torches and equipment.

CRAFTING
To make a torch you will need to find coal witch is under ground and some stick witch is in a crafting table you need 2 box' , a wooden plank on top and one on the bottom. To find coal you will need tools but coal is not always under ground but that's where you mainly find it.
To make a simple mine axe you need 3 wooden planks on the top and 2 sticks lined up like on the picture above. Then when you have done that and you want a stronger axe then with the wooden axe mine 3 cobblestone and do what you did to make a axe.
